Why I Love Fascinating Sci-fi Worlds and Genre Stories

Science fiction, dystopian and fantasy stories have always been my go-to – not just because they’re alien or dark or exciting. It’s because I’d love to be a character in these worlds. I want to feel what it’s like to fly a spaceship, ride a dragon, wield magic, and experience the wide variety of different worlds.

It’s great to see strong female characters becoming popular - think of Princess Leia, Katniss Everdeen, Tris, Sabriel, Spin - all refusing to back down when everything around them is falling apart and watching them push through to the end. 

But it’s not just the characters. It’s the strange planets and broken futures. It’s imagining what Earth would be like after everything has changed and the rules have shifted. On a day when everything is dark and miserable, I let my thoughts slip into these worlds and realise that maybe my day isn’t so bad after all. 

My love for sci-fi started with Star Wars. As a kid in the ’70s, there was nothing like it – starships, impossible battles, the Force, the rebellion. It was pure escapism, and my imagination exploded. 

From there, the genre just swallowed me whole: the neon gloom of Bladerunner, the eerie tension of Alien, the mythical wildness of Legend and there were so many others Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek, Doctor Who, Stargate, The Last Starfighter, even the super camp over-the-top Flash Gordon (not the Buster Crabbe black and white version) The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings - the list goes on and on and on.

Then YA arrived: The Hunger Games, Divergent, Skyward, The 100 and yes- even Twilight… AWESOME… There are so many to choose from and so many to look forward to. I’d like to share my enthusiasm here – let’s discuss, share and enjoy.
