Why We Can’t Stop Loving the Self-Sacrificing Hero

What do we love most about YA fiction? For me, it isn’t the romance, the rebellion or survival. It’s the moment a hero steps forward and says ‘I’ll go…’

Like when Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins volunteered to take her sister Prim’s place and face probable death. This showed her unconditional love for her younger sister.

Or when Harry Potter walked into a forest thinking he wouldn’t walk out in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by JK Rowling.

Or how Tris Prior shielded the people who doubted her in Divergent by Veronica Roth. Tris sacrificed herself again and again for others, in stark contrast to the behaviour of those in power.

These heroes are put in dangerous situations and are brave and compassionate. Their refusal to let cruelty rewrite them is what we love. When we follow a hero into danger, we ask ourselves whether we would do the same. Could I be that brave? Would I be able to hold onto my values when everything has been taken away?

A self-sacrificing hero would say YES.

I love the idealism of this YA trope, where the heroes sacrifice themselves for the greater good. They don’t have to be the strongest or most powerful, but their power lies in staying true to their morals. It shows us how one person’s actions can have a huge positive impact on those around us and gives us hope for the future.

The popularity of the self-sacrificing hero trope in YA books also helps us find our own values and is especially relevant to teenagers becoming independent of their families and asking themselves what they believe.
